An invaluable and prized architectural plant for the mixed or herbaceous border with tall spikes of unusual flowers above striking pinnate leaves which are large, glossy green, with broad angular teeth. The tubular flowers, up to 5cm in size, are a combination of dusky purple and white bracts (petals) and are borne on the strong stalks that can reach 100cm over the flowering season from July-August.
Acanthus Mollis is a vigorous clump forming herbaceous perennial and mixes well with other perennials so can be underplanted with taller spring bulbs, early flowering hardy geraniums and Nerines that will follow on in September. The genus name Acanthus comes from the Greek meaning 'thorn', which it has in abundance on the bracts.
The stalks can be cut and dried and are great when used in floral displays but also look fabulous on frosty mornings so leave some in place to give winter depth and structure to your borders.
