An exotic looking fragrant perennial plant that originates from southern Africa that is grown for the unusual clusters of pineapple-shaped flower heads and basal rosette of burgundy spotted leaves and stems.

The starry flowers are usually white or pale green-white with the most unusual tufts of green bracts that top each cluster, giving the pineapple like appearance of the plant. The flowers are then followed by long-lasting seed pods edged with burgundy.
Eucomis can be treated as a tender conservatory plant or placed in a mild, sheltered sunny spot in the garden. See the advice section for more details on growing.

Eucomis can be grown as a summer flowering perennial in a sunny border, and like a dahlia, lifted for the winter or grown in a pot and overwintered under cover.
In a pot or container. Plant the bulbs 15cm deep in a large pot with multi-purpose compost mixed with horticultural grit to give good drainage and water in well. Grow on in a frost-free greenhouse. Bring outside during the summer months but bring back inside before the first frosts.
Outside. Plant the bulbs 15cm deep in a large pot with multi-purpose compost mixed with horticultural grit to give good drainage and water in well. Grow on in a frost-free greenhouse. Once the risk of frost has passed in your area, transfer into their final flowering position. Lift in autumn, unless you are growing them in a mild sunny climate, or at the base of a warm wall and overwinter as you would a dahlia.
