Size guide - Pack of 350 Plug Plants

The most economical way to purchase your plants. Securely rooted, strong plants in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown on before planting out ready to flower. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 2.3cm deep x 1.3cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.

Using a good quality multi-purpose compost, pot up your plugs into 10cm pots or 6 cell trays. Once your plug plants have been potted on and labelled, water them in well and grow on for around 5-6 weeks.  Water once the compost starts to dry out.

Keep plants frost free until mid/late May and then harden off before being placed in their final positions when the risk of frost has passed in your area.

Water as necessary giving a liquid feed such as Neudorff Organic Plant Feed as instructed throughout the growing season.

Brookside Nursery Advice to help you get the best from your French Marigold plants.

French marigold plug plants do not require pinching out as they will grow readily into bushy plants. Slugs and snails love to munch on young growth so the more established the plant is before planting out, the better.

Once ready to plant outside, they will prefer to be situated in full sun but can tolerate some shade, especially afternoon shade. Place around 8" (20cm) apart which will give plenty of room for them to grow without being overcrowded when fully grown. Water in well.

French marigolds will benefit from being deadheaded regularly to keep them looking pristine and to encourage profuse blooming. Using small snipping secateurs, cut back to the base of the flower stem.

If planted in fertile soil, the plants will need just an occasional feed. However, if grown in containers they will benefit from a liquid feed every fortnight. Avoid, where possible, watering the foliage.

French marigolds can be in flower from early summer to the first frosts of autumn and generally have few diseases, although overwatering can cause fungal infections.

They make ideal plant companions when growing tomatoes in the greenhouse. The scent from the foliage of marigolds can deter greenfly and blackfly.

At the end of the season, French marigolds can be put onto the compost heap to rot down.
