This beautifully graceful and tall Gladioli plant is one of our favourites, with its rich magenta spikes of funnel-shaped flowers, that will grace any summer flower border. Gladioli byzantinus is often seen in a seaside setting and growing in the hedgerows in the southern counties of the UK where it has naturalised and grows wild and is usually in flower from May. Gladioli (the sword lily) are well known for their elegant, towering flower spikes that come in a dazzling array of colours and heights and they make excellent, long lasting cut flowers.Gladioli are classic herbaceous perennials that grow from bulbous corms covered with fibrous papery skin and are very easy to grow given the right growing conditions. A sunny sheltered aspect is best for gladioli to thrive so any site other than north facing will work well. Great in flower borders, cottage gardens and pots. Ideal grown in rows on an allotment or in the vegetable patch to be used as cut flowers. Taller varieties of gladioli may need staking especially if you are growing them for cut flowers or for exhibiting at shows.Brookside Nursery Top TipGladioli flower approximately three months after planting so for a continuation of flowers to pick throughout the summer months and into autumn, plant them in succession (batches every two weeks) from early May to July.
Product Code: PGLA030
For best results planting up the corms first in a container and then transferring them into their final flowering positions in mid-May may be a better option especially if the ground is wet and cold in your area when your plants arrive. Water well throughout the growing season, and lift the corms at the end of the season when the leaves turn yellow-brown and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free spot over the winter months. In a containerPlant the corms 10cms apart and 20cms deep in a multi-purpose compost and water in. Place in a bright, frost-free spot. If you are going to keep the gladioli in the pot/container all summer, place a stake in the pot at the time of planting the corms to avoid damaging them. Generally, plant 5 corms per 15cm pot. If you are then transferring the Gladioli into the garden, carefully take the whole thing out of the pot and plant the clump into a freshly dug hole in May. Gladioli are hungry plants so to get them to flower well, feed them regularly (once a fortnight) with a high potash feed once the flower spikes are approx. 15cms high and continue until the flowering season is over. In the garden borderIf you are planting the corms straight into the border in spring, choose an area that has been previously enriched with well-rotted manure, as Gladioli like a rich soil but one that is well-drained too. If the ground is wet, plant the corms 10cms apart and 10-15cms deep onto a bed of sharp sand or horticultural grit to help with drainage. Gladioli are hungry plants, so to get them to flower well, feed them regularly (once a fortnight) with a high potash feed once the flower spikes are approx. 15cms high and continue until the flowering season is over.
