Kniphofia are robust, clump-forming, rhizomatous perennials, perhaps better known as red hot pokers as once fully grown to their height of 100cms, the red and orange varieties resemble red hot pokers. However, we have chosen a more unusually coloured evergreen Kniphofia, ‘Green Jade’, almost bicolour, which has just the very tip of the flower dipped in orange. The rest of the spiky flowerheads are a striking jade green colour fading gradually to cream then white in late summer and early autumn. This variety of Kniphofia was raised in England by the famous plants woman, Beth Chatto. Kniphofia provide a vertical contrast to other lower growing broad-leaved plants and Kniphofia ‘Green Jade’ works well with grasses, Eucomis, hosta, bedding dahlias and other plants that have unusual green petal shades. Flowering over a long season, from July to September, Kniphofia plants are attractive to bees, butterflies and other insects.

Kniphofias prefer a sandy soil that has well-rotted organic matter dug into the area before planting. They will also grow in most garden soils in full sun or partial shade in a spot that is adequately well-drained and not waterlogged. Divide established clumps in late spring.Brookside Nursery Top Tip – In the first winter after planting, tie the stems together to protect the crown of the plant from severe frosts. Once established this hardy plant can withstand temperatures down to -20?C when planted in the right conditions.
