The most economical way to purchase your plants. Securely rooted, strong plants in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown on before planting out ready to flower. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 2.6cm deep x 1.8cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.
Using a good quality multi-purpose compost, pot up your plugs into 10cm pots or 6 cell trays. Once your plug plants have been potted on and labelled, water them in well and grow on for around 5-6 weeks. Water once the compost starts to dry out.
If preferred you can pot on the plugs into hanging baskets, flower bags or pots. Add a slow release plant food like Miracle-Gro Slow Release All Purpose Plant Food to your compost which will give extra nutrients for strong and healthy plant growth.
Keep plants frost free until mid/late May and then harden off before being placed in their final positions when the risk of frost has passed in your area.
Brookside Nursery Advice to help you get the most from your viola plants.
A favourite annual summer bedding plant in the UK, violas prove their worth to the gardener and with improved modern varieties such as Viola Vibrante, their reliability and flower power is second to none.
Once ready to plant out, space 4-6" (10-15cm) apart to give them room to fully grow and not be overcrowded. Plant into fertile soil that is free draining. Add some peat free compost or home-made compost to the planting hole and water in well initially.
Water violas in the morning or the evening allowing the soil to dry slightly in between watering and give them a weekly liquid feed or a weak solution of tomato feed throughout the growing season.
Deadheading violas can be therapeutic so take your time and enjoy the process. Removing faded flowers will stop the production of unwanted seeds and promote more blooms to give a long seasonal display.
Do not allow violas to dry out, as a combination of dry conditions and poor airflow can result in a mildew problem. If aphids appear use a weak solution of soapy water and spray the affected area or use your thumb and finger to rub them off the leaves.
The pretty flower petals of violas are edible and can be added to salads for a splash of colour, alongside chive and nasturtium flowers.
***For packs of 20/40 plug plants gently remove the small plugs from the tray by pushing up from the bottom using a pencil.
