We get asked this question quite a lot and there is no right or wrong answer to this. We have created a guide to help you plan based on the basket you have.
How many plants should I put in a standard Basket?
As a guide we suggest the following for a full display –
For a 12” hanging basket (not including any side panels) 6-7 plants.
For a 14” hanging basket (not including any side panels) 7-8 plants.
For a 16” hanging basket (not including any side panels) 8-9 plants.
For a 18” hanging basket (not including any side panels) 9-10 plants.
If you have a hanging basket with side panels like our Plantopia Baskets, we would follow the same guides as above in the top of the basket, then you would also look at filling the side panels with more plants for your display.
How many Plants should I put in a moss filled basket?
As a guide we suggest the following for a full display –
For a 12" moss filled basket, 5-6 plants on the top and 1 layer of 5 plants in the sides.
For a 14" moss filled basket, 6-7 plants on the top and 1 layer of 6 plants in the sides.
For a 16" moss filled basket, 7-8 plants on the top and 2 layers of 4 plants in the sides (total 8 plants in the sides).
For a 14" moss filled basket, 8-9 plants on the top and 2 layers of 5 plants in the sides (total 10 plants in the sides).
What else to consider when planting hanging baskets?
You also need to consider the habit of the plants you are putting into your basket, if you have varieties that have a ‘spreading’ habit you might not need as many, or a more ‘compact’ habit you might want to add a few more.
If you buy our varieties of plug plants that are 'large' you can put these straight into the hanging baskets to grow on, but we would always advise that you grow all plug plants on ,as instructed on the product, for around 4 - 6 weeks before you plant into your hanging baskets, to give them the best start.
