Flowering from late June – late August and growing to an eventual height of 100cm, these exotic looking beauties are best planted into a lightly shaded or sunny area in a spot where they can be left in situ and allowed to spread naturally to give a larger display year on year.
Although not fully hardy in colder areas, it is worth planting the bulbs in a sheltered and relatively warm spot. In cooler areas, covering the crown of the plant with a thick layer of straw in very cold conditions will protect the plants. Alstroemerias are good for a cottage garden look and can be grown successfully in patio containers. Fabulous as cut flowers and they last for ages in the vase.

Plant deeply either in a pot with a good quality multi-purpose compost to grow on before transplanting into the border or plant deeply into the ground in a fertile but well-drained light soil.
When shoots appear, sprinkle the area with slow release fertiliser and protect the young shoots from slugs and snails.
Taller varieties of Alstroemeria will benefit from supports put in place in early spring. This will allow the plants to grow through the supports and hide them, rather than trying to put the supports in place at a later stage.
