Perfect for growing in pots, freesias give colour and scent to patios, decking and if preferred can be grown in mixed borders or in rows in the cutting garden. Good for small gardens too. Flowering time is approximately 100-120 days after planting.
Freesias are not fully hardy so it may be best to lift them at the end of the season, allow the corms to dry, removing any that appear shrivelled. Store them in a frost-free spot in either old spent dry compost or sand. Replant them again the following spring.
In Pots in early spring (March)
Plant the bulbs (corms) pointy side up in good quality multi-purpose compost at a depth of about 5cm and about 4cm apart. Keep frost free in a greenhouse in a shaded spot. Water in and check regularly. Once the corms have sprouted move them to a lighter spot where they can have more sunlight and water regularly. They can be brought outside when the risk of frost has passed in your area. Support the growing stems with a hoop or some twiggy sticks.
In the border (April–July)
Freesias can be planted in batches from April through until July to have a longer picking season.
Plant the bulbs pointy side up at a depth of about 5cm and about 5-8cm apart in a well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny to part shaded spot.
Feed with a general-purpose liquid feed or tomato feed once the plants are growing and continue every two weeks throughout the growing season.
