Poppies never fail to bring joy to any cottage garden display. The pretty papery looking cup shaped petals pop open from tight buds atop strong hairy stems giving a zing of colour to early summer borders. The clumps of deeply serrated foliage are grey-green making a perfect foil to the bright frothy flowers. Papaver Pizzicato also make good cutting flowers.
The plants prefer an open sunny situation throughout the day but can tolerate some shade too.
Flowers May-June. Height 40cms. Good as a cutting flower. Not scented.

The most economical way to purchase your plants. Securely rooted, strong plants in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown on before planting out ready to flower. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 2.6cm deep x 1.8cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.
Remove untidy foliage in autumn. Ideally, lift and divide the clumps every couple of years in early autumn and replant with the crown just showing above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous mulch crown of the plant in spring.
