Bred in Scotland and first introduced in 1908, Ailsa Craig, a cordon type of tomato, has stood the test of time and is still one of the most widely grown tomatoes. It is tough, reliable and early to fruit with an excellent deep tomato flavour. Being an older variety, Ailsa Craig has good disease resistance and can be grown outside as well as in the greenhouse.
*A cordon type of tomato means that there is one main stem that grows, and any side shoots are removed as they appear. Cordon varieties will need staking and tying in as they grow.
The side shoots appear just above where the leaves meet the main stem. Pinching these out will result in more fruits rather than leaves.

Size guide - 3 x 6cm Potted Tomato Plants

Greenhouse Ready tomato plants. Our tomato plants are grown in 6cm jiffy biodegradable pots with no extra growing on needed. Just plant the potted tomato plant straight into your desired location, whether that be a grow bag, a 10ltr pot or straight into the ground in the greenhouse and watch them grow and produce abundance of fruit. These are at stronger stage than plug plants but will still need protecting from the cold weather and frost. Compost volume is around 6cm deep x 6cm square (at widest part). Foliage height is between 5-15cm (depending on variety).
Once your tomato plugs are potted up and labelled, water in well and continue to water evenly not allowing the compost to dry out, potting on to a larger pot as necessary if they outgrow the pot.
When the danger of frost has passed in your area, plant two tomatoes per growbag or 45cm apart in a humus-rich compost that is moisture retentive in full sun.
Start feeding weekly with a good quality tomato feed like Neudorff Organic Tomato Feed | 1 ltr.
once you see 3-4 tomato fruits. Restricting the trusses to six per plant will ensure quality over quantity.
