Our herb plugs are securely rooted, healthy plugs that would benefit from being grown on in 9/10cm pots for a few weeks before planting out in herb gardens, containers or hanging baskets. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 2.5 – 3cm deep x 3.2cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm – 5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.
General Growing Advice
Using a good quality multi-purpose compost, pot up your plugs into 10cm pots. Once your plug plants have been potted on and labelled, water them in well and grow on for around 5-6 weeks. Water once the compost starts to dry out but remember.
If preferred you can pot on the plugs into hanging baskets, flower bags or pots. Add a slow release plant food like Miracle-Gro Slow Release All Purpose Plant Food to your compost which will give extra nutrients for strong and healthy plant growth.
Keep plants frost free until mid/late May and then harden off before being placed in their final positions when the risk of frost has passed in your area.
Water as necessary giving a liquid feed such as Neudorff Organic Plant Feed as instructed throughout the growing season.
***For packs of 40 plug plants gently remove the small plugs from the tray by pushing up from the bottom using a pencil.
Chives Specific Advice
These herbs are so easy to grow and as they are perennial, will die down in the winter months and re-appear next spring. Pot them on as for the annual herbs and then plant into pots or the garden.
Supplied as medium plug plants, they were strong healthy plants with a good top growth and root system. I planted them on for 2 weeks before putting them in large tubs using a good compost mixed with perlite and vermiculite. They have been outside now for a month and all plugs are growing very well. Top quality plants, arrived the day after they were despatched, very well packaged.
I been been buying plug plants from Brookside Nursery for many years now and never had one complaint. The plug plants are packed really securely and always arrive in perfect condition. I have no hesitation in recommending this nursery .... a pleasure to deal with and I can be sure I ll be receiving top quality goods every time.
Arrived in good condition, very good value for money compared to other companies. Would buy from again
These, together with the parsley plugs ordered, arrived on time......but were in a soggy, mushy mess. They, and the parsley, are currently in intensive care but I’m about to turn off life support and sling them on the compost heap. I really do understand the pressures and difficulties faced by the horticultural industry right now but hope and expect that Brookside will resume its usual excellent service once the lockdown is properly over.
Despite the Coronavirus difficulties all my herbs arrived in a great healthy condition with efficient and helpful communications between order and delivery. Thank you
I've chosen the chives to create a little hedge-boarder to my little veggie garden. The plants arrived on time, strong and healthy. I've planted all of them in situ and they are all happy and striving.
Very pleased. Many thanks
