Size guide - Pack of 15 Plug Plants

Securely rooted, strong plants in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown for a short while before planting out ready to flower. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 3cm deep x 2cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.

Leek Musselburgh -  There is nothing like pulling up your own home-grown leeks from the vegetable patch in the middle of winter- they taste wonderful.   Leeks need a long growing season but can be harvested from autumn to late winter.  They grow well in a deep container too, so if space is short you can still grow and harvest your own leeks.

  • Our leek plug plants will benefit from being grown on in cell plant trays until they are pencil thickness.  Harden off before planting out and if frost is forecast protect under a cloche or cover, but remove this during the day.
  • Make sure the ground is well prepared incorporating some well-rotted organic matter and the earth is raked to a fine texture with no stones that could impede growth.
  • Make a deep hole with a dibber (or a thick stick) about 15cms deep and 5cms wide. Drop in one plant per hole, trying not to damage the delicate leaves.
  • You don’t need to backfill with soil, just water in to settle the soil around the roots. Plant in rows approx. 30cms apart.
  • Water during the summer if the weather is dry and weed regularly around the leeks.
  • By ‘earthing up’ or piling soil around the stems as the plants grow will ensure that the whites of the stems will stay blanched.
