An excellent improved boltardy selection. Very easy to grow, excellent cropper and as the name suggests, very good resistance to bolting. Smooth, rounded roots with a sweet flavour and good internal colouring are great for pickling or roasting with a little olive oil.

Size guide - Pack of 5 Vegetable Plug Plants

Our vegetable plugs are healthy, strong plugs in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown on before planting out. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 2.5 – 3.5cm deep x 1.5 - 3cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided
Beetroot is easy and quick to grow, especially from plug plants, and the roots can be harvested when young or left for a few more weeks to mature.
- Pot on your plugs into fresh compost in 10cms pots and grow on in a cool greenhouse or cold frame and plant out when the soil warms in late spring. The sooner they are in the ground the better really as the roots need space to grow.
- You can plant directly into the ground, if the soil temperature has warmed up, covering with a cloche for the first couple of weeks.
- Plant out into a fertile prepared bed free from pebbles if possible, at the rate of about 5/6 plants per metre if you want good size roots, or closer if space is an issue, or if you prefer smaller sized roots.
- Weed regularly by hand so that your crops are not having to compete for nutrients and moisture.
Special requirements – Ensure beetroot plants get enough water especially if there is a long spell of dry weather; the roots need moisture to swell them and they will go woody through lack of water.
