Size guide - Tray of 20 Plug Plants

Securely rooted, strong plants in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown for a short while before planting out ready to flower. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 3cm deep x 2cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.
- This flavoursome variety is ready to plant straight out into your prepared growing bed approx. 40cms apart. Dig the bed over adding organic matter. Do not let the plants become root bound in pots as this can make them form small heads.
- Although the plants prefer to be planted outside in cooler weather, protect them if a heavy frost is forecast in your area in the early days of growth.
- As the plants mature either stake them with a cane or draw up the soil around the stems to stop them toppling. This is called ‘earthing up’.
- Protect broccoli with fine netting that is no more than 1cm wide. This will stop butterflies getting to the plants.
- Apply a granular high-nitrogen fertiliser to encourage a big main head of broccoli. Side shoots will produce smaller florets, which can be harvested when ready.
- Generally, crops may be ready to harvest approx. 70-80 days after planting.
- Broccoli freezes well, so break it up into small florets and pop into the freezer in a freezer bag to use at a later date.
