Coleus are having a resurgence of popularity with new and exciting varieties that have been bred and trialled in recent years and although native to the warmer tropical climes of Asia, Coleus have proved to be versatile summer bedding plants in UK temperatures, especially in semi-shady areas of the garden.
Low maintenance and happy in a semi-shady spot, Coleus are grown for their intricate leaf patterns, striking foliage and depth of colour - Campfire gives a warm burnt orange/bronze glow of colour with a hint of pink as the new leaves emerge.
Flowers are insignificant and lilac in colour but are best snipped off, as once Coleus have flowered, they tend to die off.
Use as a statement plant in a pot or as part of a combination in mixed plantings. Coleus can be grown successfully as houseplants.

Pot Ready, Large, Healthy plants individually rooted in large plugs of compost. Ideal for planting into baskets, containers or small areas in the garden. Best results achieved if grown on for a short while in 9cm/10cm pots prior to planting out if planting straight into garden borders. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 4-5cm deep x 3-4cm square. Foliage height 5cm-12cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.
Using a good quality multi-purpose compost, pot up your plugs into 10cm pots or 6 cell trays. Once your plug plants have been potted on and labelled, water them in well and grow on for around 5-6 weeks. Water once the compost starts to dry out on the top but ensure that the plants do not totally dry out as it is difficult for them to recover.
Add a slow release plant food like Miracle-Gro Slow Release All Purpose Plant Food to your compost which will give extra nutrients for strong and healthy plant growth.
Keep plants frost free until mid/late May and then harden off before being placed in their final positions when the risk of frost has passed in your area.
Water as necessary giving a liquid feed such as Neudorff Organic Plant Feed as instructed throughout the growing season.
Brookside Nursery Top Tip - Grow Coleus in a semi-shady part of the garden or in a pot out of direct sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can lessen the brightness of the leaf colour.
