For such a small plant, Lily of the Valley has a strong fragrance, especially when a few sprigs are brought into the house. This undemanding small creeping perennial bears its dainty waxy like white flowers in graceful sprays from late spring to early summer shown off by mid/dark coloured leaves.
Lily of the Valley prefer a shady position or one with dappled shade in moist, fertile soil enriched with organic matter to perform at its best and can often be found growing under deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs, making a wonderful groundcover spread in a woodland garden.

Planting Lily of the Valley in the right situation will encourage the rhizomes (underground stems) to colonise freely. They prefer a shady position in moist, fertile soil enriched with organic matter to perform at their best and can often be found growing under deciduous trees and shrubs.
It may be best to soak the rhizomes first for half an hour before planting up into pots of multi-purpose compost laying the rhizome just below the surface and covering lightly with compost leaving any shoots (pips) just above the surface. Once rooted the plants can then be transferred into their final growing positions.
Brookside Nursery Top Tip - Dig up a few rhizomes in autumn and plant them up in a pot to give a display of indoor fragranced flowers in winter. Replant them back into the garden after flowering.
