The most economical way to purchase your plants. Securely rooted, strong plants in mini-plugs of compost. Will need to be transplanted and grown on before planting out ready to flower. Tender varieties will need protecting from frost. Compost volume around 2.6cm deep x 1.8cm square. Foliage height 1.5cm-5cm (depending on variety). Full growing instructions are provided.
Using fresh multi-purpose compost, plant each plug into a 13cm pot or similar. Water well and grow on for 3-4 weeks in a frost-free spot. Harden off the plants (by bringing them outside during the daytime) before planting them out into their final flowering positions from May or when the last frosts have passed in your area.
Delphiniums need a fertile soil so ensure the ground has some well-rotted manure or compost incorporated into the soil.
If your soil is on the heavy side, put some grit into the base of the planting hole.
*Slugs like to munch on young Delphinium leaves so some grit or copper rings around the plants.
Delphiniums may need staking unless they are in a very sheltered position so put stakes in at the time of planting to steady them as they grow.
