Onion Ailsa Craig – A very reliable plant that produces a mild flavoured large onion.
- Depending on the weather in your area, onions can be planted straight into the ground, into fertile soil in an open sunny site preferably.
- Planting closely together will result in smaller sized onions so ideally space them every 10cm or so in rows 25-30cms apart.
- Onions are shallow rooting so weed regularly so they are not competing for food and water and give an occasional feed.
- Harvest the onions when the leaves yellow and collapse which will probably be around late summer/autumn.
- Ease them out of the ground with a garden fork and lay them in the sun to dry out or use them straight away. Onions can be stored in a net bag and hung in the shed or garage until you need to use them.
